San Beda relied on a big second quarter surge as it overpowered College of St. Benilde-La Salle Greenhills, 97-72, on Monday, to join Arellano University on top in the NCAA Season 92 Juniors Basketball Division at the FilOil Flying V Arena, San Juan.
Sam Abu Hijle poured in 18 points in just 17 minutes, while 6-6 Germy Mahinay, a transferee from Perpetual Help, dished out a double-double effort with 12 points and 11 rebounds in just 13 minutes as the Cubs rolled to their fifth straight win.
Up by just two points, 21-19, after the first quarter, Abu Hijle and Mahinay went to work as the two combined for 13 points when the Cubs outscored the Junior Blazers, 26-14, in the second quarter to go into the break with a 47-33 lead.
It was all San Beda from there.
The Junior Blazers fell to 3-2.
For the first game, the Letran Squires turned back the San Sebastian Staglets, 80-73, to improve to 3-3.
Kobe Moje played an all-around game with 22 points including four three-pointers, 10 boards, three assists and three steals.
The Staglets skidded to their sixth straight defeat.
