San Beda routed last year’s second placer Lyceum, 3.5-.5, to continue to stay on top after five rounds of the NCAA Season 92 Seniors Chess Tournament at the Jose Rizal University Gym in Mandaluyong City.
Mari Joseph Turqueza, McDominique Lagula and Bryan Barcelon provided the wins on boards one, three and four, while Alcon John Datu drew with Jonathan Jota on second board to hammer out the win which kept the Red Lions at the helm with 18 points.
At distant second with 14.5 points was defending champion Arellano U, which smashed Letran, 3.5-.5, on wins by Carlo Caranyagan, Don Tyrone delos Santos and Joshua Arias on the last three boards and a split by Kyz Llantada, with Melwyn Kenneth Baltazar on top board.
LPU fell from No. 2 to joint third with College of Saint Benilde, which blanked Emilio Aguinaldo College on triumphs by Nelson Busa, Jr., Daryl Unix Samantila, Prince Kenneth Reyes and Charles Daniel Abuzo.
Letran, for its part, edged Arellano U, 2.5-1.5, to remain at the helm in the NCAA Season 92 Juniors Chess Tournament with 15.5 points, 2.5 points ahead of San Beda, which fell to LPU, 1.5-2.5.
The stunning win over the Cubs catapulted the Junior Pirates to third with 12 points.
