San Beda routed College of Saint Benilde, 3.5-.5, at the start of the second round over the weekend to move closer to sweeping the NCAA Season 92 Seniors Chess Tournament at the Jose Rizal University Auditorium in Mandaluyong City.

Mari Joseph Turqueza, Alcon John Datu and Bryan Barcelon provided the victories on boards one, two and four, respectively, while McDominique Lagula completed the rout by halving the point with Prince Kenneth Reyes on third board.

The Red Lions, who dominated the first round to clinch the early pennant, will need to beat Lyceum and Arellano U in the last two rounds this weekend to clinch the crown.

The Pirates downed the Chiefs, the reigning back-to-back champions, with a vengeful 3-1 win clinched by wins by Jonathan Jota and Jhoemar Mendiogarin on first and third boards and draws by Romulo Curioso, Jr. and Walt Allen Talan on second and fourth boards.

LPU remains in the title race if it could beat San Beda and snatch the second round pennant that would arrange the two a one-match title showdown.

Arellano U, in contrast, was dealt a big blow to its three-peat feat bid following the heartbreaking defeat.

In the Juniors’ action, San Beda edged LPU, 2.5-1.5, and Letran blasted Arellano U, 3.5-.5, to boost their title campaigns.
